In the introduction to ‘The Better Brain’ Professors Julia Rucklidge and Bonnie Kaplan acknowledge that their research would never have materialized without the astonishing discovery made by two laymen: Tony Stephan (a property manager) and David Hardy (a nutrition consultant and farm animal feed formulator).
Tony and David were co-founders and co-directors of the first Broad Spectrum Micronutritional formula for the brain. The original formula was named EMPower. Small modifications led to the name being amended to EMPowerplus.
David and Tony completed a planned business separation in 2011. Tony remained as director of Truehope and developed the subsequent variants; EMPowerplus Advanced, EMPowerplus Ultimate and EMPowerplus Ultimate Sticks. David formed Hardy Nutritionals developing his variant of the original formula in their product Daily Essential Nutrients commonly referred to as DEN. A subsequent variant, Daily Essential Nutrients with Added Vitamers was introduced in 2020.
The manufacture of the EMPowerplus and DEN ranges heralded the arrival of broad-spectrum micronutrients formulas which could be studied by academics like Bonnie, Julia and others. This group of products currently comprises the most researched Mineral – Vitamin formulas for the brain in the world.
‘The Better Brain’ summarises the first 18 years of research completed by the time this book was published in 2021. It also examines the importance of the foods that nourish the brain and those that should be avoided. A substantial chapter is dedicated to lessons learned during the Christchurch Quakes regarding improving resilience to trauma and stress with supplements.
This book is highly recommended for health practitioners, academics or anyone who wants to learn more about the growing area of research into nutrients for the brain.
